Connect Pinterest tag and Conversions API

Step by step: create a Pinterest conversion token, copy the ad account ID and the tag ID, paste them on Tracking and send a test event.

Updated

Before you start

Pinterest has two parts, and the Pinterest card on Tracking takes both:

  • The Pinterest tag in the buyer's browser. With a Tag ID, the checkout loads it and reports checkout, payment attempt and purchase.
  • The Conversions API from LatchPay's server. With an Ad account ID and a token, the server reports the same three events, and Pinterest keeps one of each.
  • You need admin access to the Pinterest ad account.
  • In LatchPay, open Settings → Tracking for the right store: ids and tokens are saved per store. Server-side tracking explains what is sent.

Connect Pinterest, step by step

  1. Open Pinterest Ads Manager

Open Pinterest Ads Manager and log in with your business account. Open Pinterest Ads Manager

  2. Open Conversions

Click the menu (three lines, top left), then Conversions under Manage business.

  3. Open Set up API

In the menu on the left, click Set up API.

  4. Create an access token

Click Generate new token. An access token is a long code that works like a password: it lets LatchPay send your checkout events to your Pinterest ad account.

  5. Paste the token

Copy the token and paste it into Conversions access token on the Pinterest card in LatchPay.

  6. Paste the ad account ID

Copy the ad account ID shown next to the token (a number, usually 12 digits) and paste it into Ad account ID.

  7. Copy the tag ID

Back on Conversions in Pinterest, click your Pinterest tag and copy its tag ID, a number of about 13 digits. Not shown there? Full guide below says where else to find it.

  8. Paste the tag ID

Paste it into Tag ID. Without a tag ID only the server sends, and the card says Server only.

  9. Save

Click Save. The card now says Tag + server.

Cannot find the tag ID? It is also the number in your tag's base code, in pintrk('load', '…'). LatchPay stores the token encrypted and only ever shows its last four characters.

Send a test event

  1. Send the test event

Click Send test event on the Pinterest card.

  2. Open Test events

In Pinterest Ads Manager, open Conversions, then Test events.

What you should see: The test event shows under Test events. Pinterest only checks it and does not record it, so it never shows in your results.

If it does not work: The card says the token was refused: the token was deleted, so create a new one and paste it. Or the card says Pinterest does not know this ad account: copy the Ad account ID again from the page where you made the token.

After your next order

  • Your tag's event history under Conversions shows checkout, initiate checkout and add payment info from both the tag and the API, each counted once.
  • The Pinterest card on Tracking shows when LatchPay last sent an event, and Failed · 7 days stays at 0.

Good to know

  • The browser tag takes an order value only in USD, GBP, CAD, EUR, AUD or NZD; in other currencies it fires without a value. The server always sends the value.
  • Pinterest accepts postal codes of digits only, so a postal code with letters is left out of the matching data.
  • Remove on the card deletes the token: server events stop and the tag keeps running.
