Orders and writeback

Writeback failed: the payment is on Whop, the order is not in Shopify

Why an order shows Writeback failed, how Whop retries the delivery for about three days, and how to fix the connection.

What the status means

Writeback failed on an order means Whop confirmed the payment, the buyer has paid, but Shopify refused or did not answer when LatchPay tried to create the order. The money is on your Whop business; the order does not exist in Shopify yet. Writing back is the short moment in between, while the order is being created.

Common causes

  • The Shopify connection is broken: the custom app was uninstalled, its secret rotated, or a scope was removed.
  • Shopify rate-limited or timed out during a busy moment.
  • A product or variant in the cart was deleted between the checkout and the payment.

How it retries

LatchPay answers the webhook with an error, so Whop delivers it again on its own schedule for up to about three days. Each delivery retries the order creation with the same numbers, and a delivery that dies halfway is reclaimed after five minutes. Only one delivery works on an order at a time, so a retry can never create a duplicate order.

What to do

  1. Check the Shopify connection

Open Shopify. A red banner names the problem; fix it and press Re-check. The next Whop redelivery then succeeds.

  2. Watch the Orders page

The Writeback failed tab lists the orders; the row shows the last error in plain words. Home's "Needs attention" counts them.

  3. If the retries run out

Create the order by hand in Shopify from the details on the Orders row (buyer email, lines, the Whop payment id) or refund the payment on Whop, and tell us what you see so we can look at the failed delivery.

Shopify order failures never affect the charge: the buyer is not charged twice, and the payment stays on Whop until you refund it.
