Order bump

Offer one extra product with a checkbox in the checkout, at the normal price or with a discount, chosen by cart rules, with numbers per offer.

What an order bump is

An order bump is one extra product the buyer can add with a checkbox, right in the checkout. It joins the same Shopify order and the same payment: the buyer ticks the box, the total updates, and one payment covers everything. You set it up on the Upsells tab in Checkout. Order bumps are on both plans, Starter and Scale. A store without an enabled offer looks exactly as it did before.

The extra product is part of the order total, so it counts towards your sales and the usage fee like any other line. See The weekly usage fee.

Add an offer

Press Add offer and fill in the form under it:

  • Product: search your Shopify products by name and pick one variant. Gift cards cannot be offered. The buyer always gets quantity 1.
  • Discount: a percentage or a fixed amount (see below).
  • Checkbox text: the line next to the checkbox, for example "Add a gift box to your order". Up to 80 characters.
  • Description: an optional line under it, up to 200 characters.
  • Show when: the cart rules (see below).
  • Offer enabled: off keeps the offer and its numbers, and shows it to nobody.

Save offer saves that one offer. A new offer starts switched off; once it is enabled, it is live on new checkouts right away. This is different from the rest of the editor: the bump's position is part of your design and is saved with Save at the top. The live preview shows the offer you are editing, or the first enabled offer.

Remove takes the offer out of the list for good. Its numbers stay in Insights. If Shopify no longer sells the product (deleted, archived or not available), the offer is marked Product unavailable and buyers do not see it.

Price and discount

The price always comes from Shopify. The buyer's browser only says "ticked" or "not ticked"; LatchPay asks Shopify for the price and the new total every time.

  • Percentage: 0 to 90 % off Shopify's price, in every currency.
  • Fixed amount: an amount off per currency, for example EUR 5.00 and USD 6.00. The offer only shows to buyers paying in a currency you listed. LatchPay does not convert currencies.
  • 0 means the normal price.

The discount is fixed when the buyer ticks the box. If you change the offer while someone is paying, their checkout keeps the discount they saw.

Which offer shows

Each checkout shows at most one order bump: the first enabled offer, from the top of your list, whose rules match the cart. Use the arrows on each offer to change the order. Under Show when you choose Always, All rules match or Any rule matches, with up to 5 rules:

  • A product is in the cart: any of the products you pick.
  • A product from a collection is in the cart: any product of the collections you pick.
  • Cart subtotal is at least: an amount per currency. It is compared with the subtotal in the buyer's currency, after discounts, before shipping and taxes. The bump itself never counts towards it. A buyer paying in a currency you did not list does not match.

An offer is also skipped, and the next one is tried, when:

  • its product is already in the cart,
  • it is out of stock, or Shopify gives no price for it in the buyer's currency,
  • it needs shipping and the cart is digital only,
  • it uses a fixed amount and has no amount for the buyer's currency.

The offer is chosen once, when the checkout opens. It does not switch to another offer when the buyer changes the address or adds a discount code.

The rules are checked again on the cart as it is when the buyer ticks the box, and again when they pay. If a discount code brought the subtotal below your amount, for example, the box cannot be ticked any more, or a ticked bump is taken out before payment.

Where the bump shows

The Position select on the Upsells tab puts the bump Above payment (the default), After shipping method or at the bottom of the Order summary. It is never placed inside Payment or below the Pay button.

  • On phones, a bump set to the order summary shows above Payment, because the summary is folded away.
  • With the two-step layout, the bump is on the payment page.
  • For a cart that does not ship, "After shipping method" shows above payment.

What the buyer sees and pays

The buyer sees a checkbox row with your text, the product's image, the product and variant name and the price. A struck-through original price shows only when Shopify really priced the item lower. Ticking the box adds the item to the order summary and updates the total; unticking takes it out again. The Pay button waits while the total updates.

Stock for the bump is checked again when the buyer pays. If it sold out in the meantime, LatchPay takes it out of the order, charges nothing, and asks the buyer to check the new total and pay again. The same happens when the cart no longer matches the offer's rules, or when Shopify's price after your discount is 0.

If the reservation timer is on, it reserves the cart items only. With a bump ticked it says that added items are checked when the buyer pays. See Blocks: reviews, timer, trust and more.

If you disable an offer

A buyer who already ticked it keeps it in their order. The change applies to checkouts opened after it.

The bump on the Shopify order

The bump arrives in the same Shopify order as the rest of the cart, created only after the payment succeeded. On that order:

  • the bump line carries the property _latchpay_upsell, which links it to the offer,
  • the order has the tag latchpay-upsell, so you can filter these orders,
  • the order note has one sentence per bump, with the product and its discount,
  • a discount on the bump is part of the order's discount, under the code LATCHPAY-OFFER, or the buyer's own code followed by +LATCHPAY-OFFER when they used one.

Shopify's order creation has no per-line discount, so the bump's discount is recorded at order level with the exact amount in the note. The order total equals what the buyer paid. See Paid orders in Shopify.

Numbers per offer

Every offer shows its numbers for the last 30 days under it on the Upsells tab. Insights has an Upsells card for the period you pick.

  • Shown: checkouts where the offer appeared on the buyer's screen, counted once per checkout. With the two-step layout the bump is on the payment page, so a buyer who left on the first page is not counted.
  • Accepted: ticked and paid. A bump ticked in a checkout that was never paid does not count.
  • Rate: accepted divided by shown.
  • Extra revenue: the bump lines after their discount, before refunds, in your shop currency.

Test payments, the editor preview and the dashboard previews are never counted. Removed offers keep their numbers.

Limits

  • One order bump per checkout, quantity 1.
  • At most 20 offers per store, on or off.
  • Up to 5 rules per offer, 20 products or 10 collections per rule, 10 currencies per amount list.
  • Texts are plain text, with optional translations for the 17 checkout languages.
  • No A/B tests, free gifts or quantity pickers.

Texts in every language

The checkbox text and the description each have a default text and optional translations under Translations. Buyers see their language, or the default text when there is none. LatchPay's own words around the bump (the discount, "Was" and "Now", the messages) are already translated. See Checkout languages.
