Set your Whop prices to include VAT
Why your Whop business should use Inclusive prices with "I'll handle tax myself" (no Whop tax fee), where to change it on Whop, and what LatchPay's check shows.
Updated
Why it matters
LatchPay charges your buyers on your own Whop business, for exactly the total your checkout shows. Your Shopify prices in the EU already include VAT, so that total includes the VAT too, and so do the orders LatchPay writes to Shopify. Whop has two tax settings of its own:
- Tax collection. With I'll handle tax myself Whop collects no tax and charges no tax fee. Whop's other two options each cost 2% per transaction, and with Whop collects and remits tax Whop also keeps the VAT out of your payouts: if you pay it in your own VAT return as well, you pay it twice.
- Tax type. When Whop adds tax on top of its prices (Exclusive, Whop's default), a buyer can be charged more than the total they saw, and the charge no longer matches the order in Shopify.
LatchPay advises Tax collection: I'll handle tax myself and Tax type: Inclusive. You keep handling the VAT in your own bookkeeping, as you do now.
If you are unsure, check with your accountant.
Which option fits depends on where you are registered for VAT and how you file it. LatchPay does not give tax advice.
Change the two settings on Whop
Open Settings › Tax on Whop
On whop.com, open the business that receives your store's payments and go to Settings → Tax. Step 3 of the setup, step 2 of Add another store and the Whop page link straight to it (Open Tax settings on Whop).
Tax collection: I'll handle tax myself
Open Tax collection at the top of the page, choose I'll handle tax myself and press Save. Whop then collects no tax at checkout and charges no tax fee.
Tax type: Inclusive
Under Checkout, open Tax type, choose Inclusive ("Tax is included in the displayed price of the product") and press Save.
Check again in LatchPay
Back in LatchPay, press Check again in the card. The box turns green when both settings are right.
What LatchPay shows
Once your business is connected, step 3 of the setup and step 2 of Add another store show Set your Whop prices to include VAT, and the Whop page shows VAT on your Whop prices. All of them read the two settings from Whop:
- Set up right: prices include VAT and Whop adds no tax. Inclusive, and I'll handle tax myself: the advice.
- Prices include VAT. Inclusive, and Whop collects tax, I remit. Right for your buyers, but Whop charges 2% per transaction for it; I'll handle tax myself is free.
- Choose “I'll handle tax myself” under “Tax collection”. Inclusive, with no tax option chosen on Whop yet. Nothing is added on top of your prices; a light note, not a warning.
- Whop remits the VAT for you. Inclusive, and Whop collects and remits tax: Whop deducts the VAT from your payouts (you pay it twice if you also file it) and charges 2% per transaction. Change Tax collection to I'll handle tax myself.
- “Tax type” is “Exclusive”. Exclusive, and I'll handle tax myself: Whop adds no VAT today, but it would add it on top as soon as Whop's tax collection is switched on. Change Tax type to Inclusive.
- Buyers can be charged VAT on top of your checkout total. Exclusive (Whop's default) while Whop collects tax, or while no tax option is chosen. Home shows the same warning. Change Tax collection to I'll handle tax myself and Tax type to Inclusive.
- LatchPay could not check this automatically. For instance your Whop connection has expired (the box offers Connect Whop again) or Whop did not answer. Check the two settings on Whop yourself, then press Check again.
It never pauses your checkout
These are warnings. None of them pauses your checkout, blocks the setup or changes anything on Whop.
Whop's tax options and fees
- I'll handle tax myself has no Whop fee. Whop calculates and collects no VAT; the VAT is in your Shopify prices and orders, and you handle it in your own bookkeeping.
- Whop collects tax, I remit and Whop collects and remits tax each cost 2% per transaction. That fee is Whop's, not LatchPay's.
Whop explains the three options on its Taxes page.
Good to know
- LatchPay reads the two settings with your Whop connection (the one you pick your business with) when you open the card (at most every ten minutes), when you press Check again, and once a day in the background after you open Home. It keeps only the two values and when it read them.
- LatchPay never changes your Whop settings. You change them on Whop.
- One Whop business can receive the payments of several stores; the setting applies to all of them.
