LatchPay vs the native Shopify Checkout

What changes when you replace the Shopify checkout with LatchPay, what stays in Shopify, costs next to Shopify Payments, limits, and who should not switch.

LatchPay replaces two things on a Shopify store: the checkout page and the payment. Products, discounts, shipping, tax, orders and customers stay in Shopify, and each paid order is written back there; the payment lands on your own Whop business instead of Shopify Payments. You gain a fully editable checkout on any Shopify plan and a payment account in your own name, and you give up Shop Pay, Shopify's checkout apps and, usually, some fees.

What changes

When a buyer presses Checkout or Buy now, a line in your theme sends them to LatchPay's hosted checkout instead of Shopify's. From there:

  • The checkout page is LatchPay's: a one-page checkout in the shape of Shopify's, with your branding, in the buyer's language (17 checkout languages). See what buyers see.
  • The payment runs in Whop's payment box on your own Whop business: card first, plus the other methods Whop offers for that order, such as iDEAL, Bancontact or Klarna, and Apple Pay and Google Pay where Whop offers them. See payment methods.
  • Whop is the merchant of record, so the buyer's card statement starts with WHOP*, not your store name.
  • Payouts, refunds and disputes happen on Whop, on Whop's schedule. Refunds made on Whop are mirrored into the Shopify order. See refunds.
  • The checkout is editable. A checkout editor with blocks (reviews, trust badges, guarantee, free-shipping bar, reservation timer, social proof, custom fields, your own HTML), an order bump and a post-purchase offer on a configurable thank-you page.
  • Tracking can run from LatchPay's server to Meta, TikTok, Google Analytics 4, Pinterest and Snapchat, next to the browser pixels. See server-side tracking.
  • Fraud rules and disputes get their own pages: a points-based review and decline score, and evidence filed to Whop from the dashboard. See fraud rules and chargebacks.

What stays in Shopify

  • Products, variants, images, inventory and prices.
  • Discount codes and automatic discounts (one code per order at checkout).
  • Shipping rates, tax as your store charges it, and the Markets currency the buyer shopped in.
  • Orders, fulfilment, the order status page and Shopify's confirmation email.
  • Customers and their order history.

LatchPay does not copy your catalog anywhere. Each checkout is quoted live from Shopify, and one Shopify cart becomes one Whop charge for exactly the quoted amount. The Shopify integration page lists what LatchPay reads and writes.

What it costs

Three companies can charge on a LatchPay order, and each sets its own fee. The details are in Whop's and Shopify's fees.

LatchPay, as of September 2026 (see fees):

  • Starter: €100 per 30 days plus 0.5% of paid orders minus refunds.
  • Scale: €299 per 30 days plus 0.25% of paid orders minus refunds.
  • The two cost the same at €79,600 of paid orders a month; above that Scale is cheaper.
  • The usage fee is billed weekly to the card on your membership, never taken out of your payouts. No setup fee.

Whop charges its processing fee on every store payment on your business, under Whop's terms. The rate differs by payment method; check your business's payment settings on Whop.

Shopify may add a third-party transaction fee to each order when you do not use Shopify Payments. As of September 2026, Shopify lists 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, and Shopify's Plus pricing page lists 0.2% for Plus stores using a third-party processor.

A worked example with LatchPay's own numbers: a store takes €10,000 in paid orders in a week and refunds €500. On Starter the LatchPay usage fee for that week is 0.5% of €9,500, which is €47.50; on Scale it is €23.75. Whop's processing fee and any Shopify transaction fee are on top.

Compared with Shopify Payments, this usually means more in fees per order. The case for switching is not that it is cheaper; it is control of the checkout on a non-Plus plan, and payments on an account in your own name.

Honest limits

  • Shop Pay and storefront express buttons are hidden. They open Shopify's own checkout and would skip LatchPay. Apple Pay and Google Pay are offered on the LatchPay checkout where Whop offers them. See express buttons.
  • Checkout apps do not run. Apps that inject into Shopify's checkout (checkout upsells, custom fields, trust badges) have no place on LatchPay's checkout. Storefront apps, such as reviews, bundles and cart drawers, keep working.
  • No subscriptions or selling plans.
  • One discount code per order, plus automatic discounts.
  • WHOP* on the statement. Some buyers may not recognise it at first.
  • Payouts follow Whop's schedule, and refunds are made on Whop, not in the Shopify admin.
  • Platform risk. Full checkout replacement is officially a Shopify Plus capability. LatchPay works from the theme; Shopify may tighten what themes can do. Switching off restores Shopify's checkout on the next page load.
  • Pauses. If the membership lapses or a usage-fee charge fails, LatchPay stops creating checkouts and buyers get Shopify's checkout until it is fixed.

Who should not switch

  • Stores happy with Shopify Payments. If your payouts are reliable and you do not need to change the checkout steps, switching adds fees and removes Shop Pay for little gain.
  • Stores where Shop Pay drives a large share of orders. Check your own numbers first; losing it can cost more than any checkout change earns.
  • Subscription businesses. Selling plans are not supported.
  • Stores on Shopify Plus that rely on checkout extensions. You already have an editable checkout, and those extensions would stop running.
  • Stores that need a specific checkout app with no equivalent in LatchPay.
  • Anyone who cannot open or use a Whop business. All store payments run through it.

Who it suits

  • Stores on Basic, Grow or Advanced that want to change the checkout steps, add an order bump or a post-purchase offer without Plus.
  • Stores that want store payments on a payment account in their own name, and accept Whop's terms and the WHOP* descriptor.
  • Stores that want server-side tracking and fraud rules as part of the checkout.

Try it without risk to live orders

Setup takes about 15 minutes: an account and plan, your Shopify store through a custom app, your Whop business, and one theme line (see the setup overview and the Whop integration). Nothing changes for buyers until the theme line is in place and you switch the checkout on, and one switch turns it off again. Look at the demo first, or sign up when you are ready to connect a store.

Frequently asked questions

What stays in Shopify when I use LatchPay?

Products, inventory, prices, discounts, shipping rates, tax, Markets, orders, fulfilment, confirmation emails and customers. LatchPay quotes the cart live from Shopify and writes each paid order back.

Where does the money go with LatchPay?

Store payments land on your own Whop business, with Whop as merchant of record, so a buyer's card statement starts with WHOP*. Payouts, refunds and disputes stay on Whop.

What does LatchPay cost?

As of September 2026, Starter is €100 per 30 days plus 0.5% of paid orders minus refunds, and Scale is €299 per 30 days plus 0.25%. Whop's processing fees and any Shopify third-party transaction fee come on top.

Can I switch back to the Shopify checkout?

Yes. Switching LatchPay off in Settings brings Shopify's checkout back on the next page load; the theme line can stay in place.

Does Shop Pay work with LatchPay?

No. Shop Pay and the storefront's other express buttons are hidden while LatchPay is on, because they would skip this checkout. The LatchPay checkout offers Apple Pay and Google Pay itself where Whop offers them.
